Dating sites are a joke

Dear Geoff, Glad to hear you found someone special, and even happier that you spoke up.

Most of the people that write about online dating write about what’s wrong with it. I mean, that’s what news is – emphasize the bad, misery loves company, etc.

I’ve had an onslaught of terrible dating experiences in the last year (including someone who turned out to be a drug dealer, someone who was mad I didn’t want to come hang out at his bedbug-infested apartment, and a commitment-phobe friend who constantly appears to be doing an uncanny Jekyll and Hyde impression). (Wow.) There’s no end to what I could write about my experiences on Match.com, and I’ve only been on the site for a week.

I am also at the age where apparently I better hurry up if I want kids. (My favorite is probably the guy whose opening line was, “Hey baby u r cute n sexy, come cuddle w me by my fireplace.” Sounds great, what’s the address?!

But with 87 million singles in the United States and nearly 40 million dating online, it seemed a good way to meet someone.

"No one is going to respond to someone who says they are a couch potato and likes to stay home."I was lucky. (I have friends who have been on dating sites for years.) I corresponded with 50 women and met 15 for drinks, which is recommended over meeting someone for dinner. Because if after 15 minutes you don't like the person you are stuck; and for men that means the bill as well.

But dating sites jokes redneck said he would have to think the matter over carefully.

My guy friends (also educated, attractive) complain that they get no responses and female acquaintences tell me that they get so many emails, etc, that they don’t know where to start-and often do nothing.

When my marriage ended 11 years ago, I went online. They loved to ski, surf, go to the theater, travel to exotic places, go for walks on the beach, run marathons and read. "People present themselves in the best light online," he said.

So I signed up for Match.com, which has more than 21.5 million subscribers. One woman wrote me, "Unlike Popeye, I am NOT what I am but if nothing else I am kind and compassionate and to top it off I am interesting and exciting." None of the women on Match were boring. Philip Muskin, Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center, is not surprised.

I’m turning 30 in a few months, and I recently realized I’m now at the age I made a lot of promises about in the past.

One of those promises was that if I was still single at 30, I’d try online dating.

But then one cold night in November, I met a Match date in a bar in Greenwich Village.
